The Focused Programs provide targeted, two-course sequences for professionals who want to deepen their skills in specific areas of student success. These programs can be completed independently or after the General/Accelerated Track.

Description

Discussion Strategies for Civic Participation is a two course online focused certificate program that presents the five instructional strategies that are part of the DSCP social action pedagogy (DSCP 301) and Practicum (DSCP 302) are organized around 10 units within each course, to be completed sequentially. Students go through units with unit completion due dates to facilitate the completion of assignments.

DSCP Instruction (301)

This first course presents the 5 instructional strategies that are part of the Discussion Strategies for Civic Participation (DSCP) social action pedagogy: Norms, Yes-No-Maybe, Respectful Debate, Audience-Focused Communication (AFC), and PLAN. THese strategies are grounded in research and have been developed so middle and high school teachers can integrate strategies and civil discourse into existing curriculum content. This course has been constructed to take a minimum of 10 hours to complete, yielding 1 professional development credit or continuing education unit (2 CEU).

DSCP Practicum (302)

This is the practicum course that allows students to develop DSCP plans and deliver them directly to students with the assistance of their course instructor (1 CEU). Participants must successfully complete DSCP 1 before they can register for DSCP 2.
