A Leader's Guide to Building SEL in Schools
This course takes you on a journey to gain the leadership skills you need to help your school become a school of social-emotional competence and character, with a school culture and climate that is positive, welcoming, caring, healing, and supportive for ALL students and ALL staff. We use the analogy building construction to guide you through the process.
You will be guided through modules of 1.5 hours each, by experts who have been the architects, laborers, engineers, and end-users before you. They represent educators from a wide range of geographic and demographic areas. Upon completion of the 5th module, you will be asked to evaluate the course and then access your certificate of eight professional development hours and your digital badge. Then you will be ready to embark on building SEL/SECD in your school. If you have already started on the path, you will pick up some useful, and/or confirmatory, tips to help you.
The modules start with 4 building blocks-- social-emotional competencies, character development (SECD), culturally responsive education, and a positive school culture and climate—and progress to show examples of schools walking the talk and how they got there. This includes how to assemble and manage a leadership team, create community, and find the best approach for your school to build your students’ SECD competencies.
This course will advance your knowledge and capacity to provide leadership to build schools in which every student feels as if they are safe, valued, and to which they feel a strong sense of belonging. This, of course, applies to schools of all kinds and is designed to build school capacities to serve all learners – ALL MEANS ALL!
