The story begins with a belief that every child deserves to attend a school that is inspiring, challenging, supportive, safe and healthy, engaging, and build on mutual respect.
Every child needs competencies for success beyond the test score—skills for the tests of life, a life of college, career, contribution, and caring.
Someone has to take responsibility for schools to become cohesive and coherent places to accomplish the above goals. These courses and this credentialing program are designed to prepare you for that responsibility, but we don’t expect you to succeed on your own. You are entering into a community of mutual support and consultative assistance, a virtual Professional Learning Community, that will be at your side as you move forward. Within your country and around the world, people sharing the vision and goal want to move beyond the dream and into reality. By teaching the mind and encouraging the heart—in each other, as well as in our students—we can be successful.
That is our unique pledge to you—you will be prepared to implement a wide range of social-emotional and character-based programs to your students, and you will also be joining others whose collective experience, wisdom, creativity, and problem-solving skills toward a shared goal will make each of us and all of us better. We are all instructors and students in the service of improving the lives and futures of all children entering schools.

Earn a Certificate for Instruction in
Social-Emotional Learning and Character Development
The Instruction in Social-Emotional Learning and Character Development certificate program is an implementation of a series of online courses that leads to a certificate in Instruction in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and Character Development (CD) in Schools and After-School Programs. This unique program is a non-credit program which offers all educational staff, school mental health professionals, and those working in after-school programs the opportunity to enhance their professional development skills in the field of Social-Emotional and Character Development. The Instruction in SECD certificate program offers two tracks: the General Track Program and the Accelerated Track Program.
"Which program track is right for me?"
The General track program is composed of three courses, each addressing a different level of participation and delivery perspective of Social-Emotional and Character Development (SECD) competencies. This program is for those with some to no knowledge/experience in teaching SECD directly to students. Visit our General Track page for more information.
The Accelerated track program is composed of two courses strictly designed for those who have 5+ years of consistent and intentional teaching of Social-Emotional and Character Development to students in their setting. This fast paced program builds on the strong SECD teaching experiences spanning 5+ years and will result in creating a portfolio documenting this journey as well as an experience in developing and implementing an SECD workshop for staff.

I think the 3-course program provides an excellent background in SECD and then allows us the opportunity to put what we learn into practice. I think it is important to learn first about ourselves, as this really helps us to be able to work more effectively with our students. I like the Canvas format much better than the first format that we were using in the earlier courses. I also like the Zoom app. for our live chats and found it more user-friendly than Google app.
I found the connection with like minded professionals to be very helpful and important in my learning process. It made the experience more real and allowed for me to feel connected and supported. At the same time I found the guidance and encouragement from my instructors to be most helpful as well. It is a resource on which I can bank on at any given time. I just need to draw upon their supportive words and encouraging smiles!
To me the chats were the most valuable thing about the course. The chats opened an all together new discussion and learning paradigm. It opened our minds to things happening elsewhere in the field of education and helped connect with kindred educators who believed SEL as an important part of the education process.
Working with students while having a support system in place, so I could apply what I learned from what was happening in my classmates' classes into my own.
