Dr. Kasia Bieszczad receives $391K from the NIH’s National Institute on Aging to study the interaction between hearing function and the progression to Alzheimer’s Disease (2)

Reports show that the risk of dementia increases by 36% for those over the age of 60 years with a hearing loss greater than 24dB SPL. In fact, the #1 risk factor in middle-age for developing Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is hearing loss. Dr. Bieszczad’s CLEF Lab will investigate the links known from clinical literature between hearing function, progressive cortical atrophy, and dementia using multi-level approaches in a Next-Generation rat model of AD. An understanding of these interactions may be essential to fully understand the etiology of AD and related dementias and lead to novel treatment strategies.
