The Psychology Department's Dr. Diana Sanchez's research was recently featured in an article entitled, Many men avoid doctors. That can be dangerous, even deadly, for them. Dr. Sanchez’s work on masculinity has shown that men who highly endorse masculine ideals may be at elevated risk for psychological and physical health problems yet avoid healthcare services or under-report their symptoms to healthcare providers. Dr. Sanchez's work suggests that the pursuit of self-reliance to prove masculinity may lead some men to underutilize healthcare services with dangerous consequences.
